Ingredients

  • 2 sheets Puff pastry
  • 4 Egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 4 Egg whites
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 2 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1/2 cup Powdered sugar (for meringue)
  • 1/2 cup Dark chocolate (melted for drizzle)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake puff pastry sheets until golden and crisp; let cool.
  2. For custard: heat milk and vanilla in a saucepan. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Slowly temper the egg mixture with the hot milk, then cook until thickened. Stir in butter and chill slightly.
  3. Layer the custard between two sheets of baked puff pastry.
  4. Beat egg whites with sugar until glossy stiff peaks form; spread over the top of the pastry.
  5. Toast the meringue with a kitchen torch or under the broiler until golden.
  6. Drizzle melted chocolate across the top.
  7. Chill to set before slicing into squares.
